Miami Dade County Public Schools Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8 Center Classroom Addition

RESPONSIBILITIES

This new, 3-story classroom building is incorporated into the Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8 Center’s existing campus. The ground level of the building includes a sheltered basketball court with bleachers and a scoreboard. The second and third floors include classrooms, laboratories, and administrative spaces. The main façade features a custom ceramic tile pattern inspired by the tropical, modern architecture of the neighborhood and South Florida.

The building and associated fields are also utilized by the Town of Bay Harbor for after school activities, movies on the lawn, and other public functions. Site constraints and site conditions added complexity to this project including having to design the entire site on piles, providing flood protection, and cantilevering a portion of the building over the field area.

This design is being used by MDCPS as a new prototypical design for classroom additions on tight, urban campuses.

Location: Bay Harbor Islands, Florida
Size: 32,000 sf
